Note/Guidance for Condensed Matter Physicists:

It is usually the case that most new Physics graduate students have little knowledge of the various sub-branches of Biophysics. This is rarely a problem, however, as many physics students have aptitude and/or skills in the use and application of advanced instrumentation. This is desireable and may be as important as knowledge of the biological systems that will be studied. I have found that most students who express an interest in condensed matter physics do very well in Ph.D. programs with a concentration in Biophysics.

In fact, many students in our department who are pursuing a PhD in condensed matter physics are in fact being supported by fellowships from two Biological science programs at Georgia State University (the Molecular Basis of Disease Program and the Brains and Behaviour Program).

Do not limit yourself on application forms to expressing an interest in only condensed matter physics.

Keep your options open and express an interest in Biophysics also. Much of Biophysics is after all just soft condensed matter physics.
